Michael. my initial idea was, that a mainly monochrome picture should be ideal for B&W. But what you call an "elegant variation out of the color" or as Carl said "the color version is richer, more visually rewarding" is something like an added but dominant effect of color. So I think it is very helpful andinformative to see two versions of a picture.
My theory is that, since the photo is so repetitive in its elements, you get more elegant variation out of the colour than the B&W.
