Das Geheimnis des whow!-Faktor's / The secret of the whow!-factor

Whow, super pictures, how he is doing that?

Why do I see good pictures only with the colleagues and my own work, not bad at all, but somehow…?

You really want know how it works?

At first go to the bio supermarket, buy some olive bread, olive oil, tomato mark, bavarian potato salad (that, with the inserted fork!) and a cup fruit whey, flavor Limette. Now here we go!

But seriously!

There are the good pictures (our professional standard?), there are the photos, on which we look longer than 4 seconds - and - they really exist, the pictures with the whow-factor.

The fundamental question is, whether such photos find a home in the journalistic everyday life. We are nevertheless captured in a net of editorial requirements, technical problems and what we find on location. It is our achievement, to take printable, meaningful, “journalistic” photos, those correspond to usual professional standards. And if one has a good day and a little bit of luck, then he could take a photo with a whow-factor.

However, more probable it is, that such a photo develops rather if it is not intended at all. A snapshot, seen by accident and easy captured without an purpose intended. A nice little picture.

Perhaps it moves in the archive. And dips then, months later, for coincidence. And there we see the potential, which is within.

We put on a new layer “tone correction”, set shade, lights, shift central tones. It flashes somewhat.

We duplicate the background layer and turn on a “local contrast enhancement". It flashes already more.

Nevertheless, the picture is still too much a reproduction, two dimensional, the lights do not live yet. A further attempt with one “gausian blur overlay”. Completely great!

But the lights are now too undifferentiated. Thus with “depths/lights” once again improved - and WHOW!

Naturally other aspects are also important: does the motive stand in a surrounding field, does it fill the picture frame, does it blow out of the frame? Does the motive live with the color or does the color work against the statement? Does it need black-and-white for abstraction?

Eye, head and belly, technical perfection, passion, sympathy and a feeling for the “moment” can create good photos - and sometimes somewhat more.
